Star Twin 1951 - 1954 |
 |
 |
This
1952 Star Twin features BSA's designer Bert Hopwood's updated version
of Perkin's 500cc engine housed in a plunger sprung frame.
|
Although
this name was also given to a 1949 twin carburettor version of the long
stroke A7, it more commonly refers to the updated Hopwood designed 497cc
engine housed in a plunger sprung frame.
These were
the machines which carried BSA works riders Brian Martin, Fred Rist and
Norman Vanhouse to a 1952 Maudes Trophy win - guaranteeing the machine's
sales success.
With a top
speed of 92mph and acceleration which The MotorCycle called zestful, the
Star Twin is a good buy. At a 60mph cruising speed, petrol consumption
works out at a reasonable 64mpg. Hopwood's redesigned engine is trouble
free, and the gearbox is excellent with positive changes every time.
Often fitted
with BSA's own dualseat, a single saddle gives a more comfortable ride.
Plunger springing can make the handling choppy on rough surfaces.
